## Overview

The StarTech.com 6ft USB to Serial RS232 Adapter features a robust FTDI FT232RL chipset, delivering fast data transfer speeds up to 921.6Kbps. Its 6-foot cable offers flexible connectivity, while broad OS compatibility ensures seamless plug-and-play use across Windows, Mac, and Linux. Designed to resolve DTE/DCE conflicts with null modem functionality, this TAA-compliant adapter is a reliable, professional-grade solution for connecting legacy serial devices to modern USB ports.

## Description

From the manufacturer Add a Null Modem RS232 serial port to your laptop or desktop computer through USB Solves DCE/DTE Conflicts Directly The FTDI USB to Null Modem Serial Adapter Cable (1-Port) converts an available USB 1.1 or 2.0 port into an RS232 Null Modem serial DB9 port , solving DCE/DTE conflicts directly, without requiring additional cross-wired serial cables or adapters. COM Retention and Integrated FTDI Chipset This compact adapter features COM retention , allowing the same COM port value to automatically be re-assigned to the port if the cable is disconnected and re-connected to the host computer, or if the system is rebooted. The integrated FTDI chipset supports additional customization, advanced features, and compatibility not necessarily offered by other solutions. Broad Compatibility The USB to Null Modem adapter is compatible with a broad list of operating systems including Windows, Windows CE, Mac OS and Linux, making it easier to integrate into mixed environments .

Review: Expensive but Good - Startech normally deliver very good products, this was very expensive for what it is but for my job so far its proved incredibly useful and helpful. Universally worked on all serial ports and switches needed.
Review: Works Perfectly With A Flex Radio 6400M! - I recently upgraded my amateur radio station to a Flexradio Flex-6400M software defined radio, and wished to be able to automatically tune my Ciro-Mazzoni 'Baby" magnetic loop antenna as I did with the previous transceiver. The 6400M is not provided with a serial port, but it does have a USB 'A' port. By using a USB to RS-232 adapter it seemed possible to control my antenna. Unfortunately the USB drivers built into the radio only recognise the FTDI chipset, so it is important to use an adapter so equipped. The StarTech adapter utilises this chipset, and, in addition has two LEDs to indicate activity on the transmit and receive data lines. The cable is sufficiently long that no extension is necessary, and the pin-outs are in the correct order so that a NUL modem cable is not required either. In my case, after setting the USB configuration in the radio, and setting the Ciro-Mazzoni RS-232 speed and protocol as required, it worked perfectly first time. If you are in a similar position and wish to control, for example, a Step-IR or its Italian equivalent the Ultra-Beam antenna, or otherwise require a serial interface to the radio, then I can thoroughly recommend this adapter as a trouble-free solution.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Hi. How long is the cable?**
A: This one I have is approximately 1 metre in length. Also refer to my user review for another cable to extend the distance.

**Q: Can anyone confirm that this really uses an ftdi chip inside and not one of those buggy prolific chips?**
A: The simple answer is, yes this is a genuine FTDI chipset. You can always determine the chipset by using Device Manager in Windows, scrolling to the COM ports section, and then right-click on the COM port select Properties, and then select Driver and it will display the driver details which should show the manufacturer. However, I must take you to task regarding 'those buggy Prolific' chipsets. The genuine Prolific chipsets are highly reliable, and you can download from the Prolific website a chip verification tool that will positively identify the chipset. There are a number of cheap Chinese clones that appear to be Prolific, but which will fail this test and are not reliable. Hope this is of help.

**Q: Hi. Would this work for a LG 47LD450 TV as it has RS-232C Connection at the back of TV for service and control purposes? thanks**
A: Probably not .You need a standard RS 232 adapter not a null modem wired cable.

**Q: Is this compatable for cutter plotters?**
A: I can't get it to work if that's any help

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ You get what you pay for
*by B***0 on 27 July 2013*

Having tried cheap versions of a USB to Serial converter, which were nothing but grief, I bought this entirely on the strength of the unanimous 5 star reviews. I have only had the product a couple of hours and it is already in and working having successfully connected my Palm Vx to a USB port on my XP pc. There was a minor glitch in loading the driver, which under XP did not install automatically as others have found. Fortunately, there was documentation in English with the product, which helped. Had to look a couple of directories beyond where the doc suggested, but it finally installed OK. Restarted the machine as requested and, bingo, it works perfectly. Let's hope it stays that way - the previous adapter packed after a few minutes - but for now I have no hesitation in adding yet another 5 * rating. Although much expensive than the previous adapter, which cost £2.30, I wish I'd gone straight for this one. It would have certainly saved me a load of time, effort and stress trying to figure out why it wasn't working. In this case, you certainly do get what you pay for!
