I assumed from the picture that the length can be adjusted using the black buckle, but in fact it is a fixed length lead. The only purpose of the buckle seems to be to help keep the lead fastened tight around the scooter. I often have to manually gather a section of the lead in so that I can keep the children close to me when scooting near a busy road.
