On receipt of the B525, and within about 60 seconds (put EE SIM card in, switch on, connect to WiFi), we now have download speeds of around 70Mbps - that's fibre optics speed! We're also getting upload speeds of 25Mbps. The B525 is a very good router, and the CAT6 protocol is currently the fastest available. Huawei makes professional communication equipment for most of the mobile network providers, and their expertise is evident in their consumer products. The 4G reception is excellent (compared to my iPhone), and the dual WiFi frequencies give you the choice of reach or speed. The Huawei B525, when placed at a window facing the nearest 4G mast (about 8 miles away) locks on to the 4G network with a steady 2 bars out of 5, just using its internal antenna. This gives a download speed of around 12 Mbit/s and, far more importantly for me, an upload speed of around 6-7 Mbit/s. An external antenna would no doubt improve those speeds considerably, but my monthly allowance total of 100GB would be used up in an instant, so I may not bother to get one, as the unit is fast enough for my needs as is. Update: after the router updated its firmware, the received signal is better optimised, with 3 bars now instead of 2. Upload speed a solid 1MByte/s (8Mbit/s) Update Dec '18: I did try it with an external outdoor antenna, a well-reviewed one costing nearly £100 on here, but the received signal level DROPPED, no matter how I positioned it. Normal delivery is just the router and power supply. The B525 has internal antennae which are very good. Cheap basic rabbit's ears external antennae are very unlikely to improve performance. If using indoor antennae the performance will depend on location in the building because this influences the available signal. Also depends on mobile coverage in your area, distance from mast and on how busy the network is. Best is to try without external antenna and then if speed is not sufficient consider outdoor antenna of which there are two basic types, omni-directional and directional. You can change from Suomi to English on top right of page. Look on 4G/5G tab for useful comments on antenna types and uses. The coloured map shows antenna types and ranges from mast. Google translate map notes from Finnish. See comments on built-up or rural areas. Think of it this way. The router communicates frequently both ways with the mast. The mast is powerful but the router is a small transmitter. A good external antenna increases the power of the router and also better captures the signal coming from the mast. It can help speed even in good signal areas because it improves the detailed communication. Best to try router on its own, read up on antennas and how to select / use. A good antenna can cost more than router and may not be needed. Do NOT misunderstand the 300Mbps. That is a theoretical speed that may be got in laboratory test conditions with no network restrictions and using multiple bands in channel aggregation. This router pulls in signal from 6 miles away in my poor location in Ireland. I also use D-Link DWR953 AC750. Performance of both is similar but I prefer the design of the D-Link because it’s shape is neater and easier to fix cables to. It sits better on a table or shelf and the sim is easier to remove if you need to take out in a portable router when going out. I also have a D-Link router in Portugal. That performs well in the hot climate. Both routers have terminals for external aerial which is essential for getting the signal into the house in poor signal locations. Both routers can be locked to 4G only which I do in Ireland as the 4G signal is weaker than the 3G and would not normally be selected otherwise. The router on its own is the best solution for me. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Landline no longer required... *by B***I on 9 August 2020* After much investigation I opted for this product to replace my broadband from landline to 4G. We live around 5miles from the nearest BT exchange served by old dated copper wire infrastructure with no sign of fibre ever appearing in our vicinity. I was tiring of paying for a poor service with <1Mbps download and frequent drop outs. I took the plunge and bought this, simple to set up, popped in the SIM card and I was overwhelmed at the speeds I had been missing out on, our nearest mast is about 2 miles Line of Sight which gives 30-40Mbps download. Service seems good too, no drop outs or lack of service to date. Router is located on a downstairs window sill and reception is showing the full 5 bars with just the internal antenna, I had considered an external antenna which the router does accept but there is no need in my case. Only one grumble (hence only four stars) is the wi-fi strength isn't great, I have subsequently bought some powerline adaptors to counter this which have solved this issue.
