There is no option to turn up the volume on the actual unit so you can only do it with the volume on your phone. And when you do turn it all the way up, some of the songs are distorted sounding. It really doesn't get loud at all, I bought it to listen to music while cooking and working out and you can't tell a difference between the unit and my phone. I would not recommend this to a friend and if I could return it I would. That’s the main reason why I ordered this speaker. The fact that the sound this puts out is excellent makes it even better. It’s clear from the lowest volume to the the top volume. Has a nice bass to it without overpowering the rest of the sound. I’m not sure what the range is on the Bluetooth but it’s double what my other spaker was and that one claimed a 30 feet range.
