You have to get very close (15cm) before the image reflected comes into focus. **Q: Does the base screw off to pack in a case?** A: Hi this mirror is excellent quality & the high magnification is very clear, accurate & undistorted however the base does not unscrew for travelling. I bought one of those small mini high magnification mirrors with suckers on the back for when I'm travelling. Easy to pack & does the job well. **Q: what is the magnification strength?** A: This is an excellent product.One side is normal, whilst the other side has very strong magnification.
