The tub itself holds the shavings and so can be emptied when needed. To use, lift the plastic lid on the top to access the holes. When it is time to empty, press the black button on the side and carefully pull the top from the bottom (making sure you don't tip any shavings out). It is a bit stiff but likely that is because this is new and it will loosen over time with wear. A tiny bit more expensive than other similar products on the marketplace but I feel it was worth paying a little extra for something that is good quality. Review: Performs perfectly. Well worth the price - This sharpener has sharpened my colouring pencils and normal graphite pencils with absolute ease. Nice and sharp with no tearing or breakages.
