## Description

The Periodic Table is one of the most recognizable images in science - and in our culture. Its 118 elements make up everything on our planet and in the entire universe. But how many of us actually know how to interpret its distinctive design? And what does its unique arrangement tell us about the behaviour of each element in the world around us? The Periodic Table looks at the fascinating story and surprising history of each of these elements, from the little-known uses of gold in medicine to that of arsenic as a wallpaper dye in the ninteenth-century and the development of the hydrogen bomb. Packed with interesting facts and figures and helpful illustrations, this accessible guide will help the armchair chemist navigate through the different groups of elements - and discover the world afresh.

Review: Super Book - This has beautiful illustrations which really encourage learning about the natural world and the text is highly informative.
Review: An excellent guide to all known elements - A beautifully produced guide to the Periodic Table and known elements, with lots of interesting information about when, and by whom (and often how) the elements were discovered, and how they have, and are being put to use. The fascinating Introduction explains how the Periodic Table came about, and it also explains the structure of atoms. The whole guide is written in a bright and often amusing manner, with a page given to the description and information about each element, with the opposite page showing a superb photograph. In my opinion this book should be in the possession of every science (especially chemistry) student, and who knows, hopefully it may inspire everyone who reads it, to take an interest in science.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Informative but with errors
*by H***O on 13 December 2013*

A very interesting book for the would-be chemist or armchair scientist. Each element gets the same treatment - history of discovery, main uses and interesting facts. Who knew smoke detectors use americium which is more radioactive than weapons-grade plutonium? However I did spot quite a number of contradictions in the text i.e. the main entry for gold notes the largest nugget was 112kg but the text below the accompanying image states the largest nugget weighed 78kg. There are a number of similar errors dotted throughout the book which annoyed me a bit but didn't detract too much from the overall pleasure. Perhaps the author just wants to see if you're paying attention... Minus one star for the errors - now write out "I must proof-read my work" one hundred times.
