There are 2 versions of this adapter the V1 works out of the box the V2 doesn't. You can get the v2 to work with the raspberry pi, but its not as easy as with other wifi dongles as you need to compile the software and update it every time you update the operating system on the pi. **Q: Can this be used to create a wifi hotspot?** A: Technically, yes... any wifi adapter can use the windows 10 hotspot feature to share your PCs internet with other devices.... in practice, this product does not work well for local networking like this.... don't expect anywhere near the advertised connection speeds. I tried 2.4ghz modes and got connection of less than 180 (of the up to 400), and on 5ghz mode I got less than 280 (of the advertised 867). Can't recommend this product at all for this purpose. **Q: Does anybody know if this is V1 or V2 or has anyone used it with Ubuntu Linux** A: I've found it works under Ubuntu 16 on a plug-and-play basis, although the connection seems to need regular refreshing. But, as it doesn't claim to work under Linux, that is a bonus and certainly it is more solid under both Win 7 and XP Pro. Still to test it on Win 10. **Q: Does it work with windows 8.1?** A: I have just purchased a TP-LINK TL-WN823N 300Mbps. Running it on windows 8.1. Set up very very easy and on the internet in 10 minutes.Buy this one. It appears quite fast and for what it is, very cheap. Very happy with it :) ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good but poor instructions *by A***S on 11 November 2024* The product works, without a doubt. However, to set the thing up is difficult. I’m running windows 11 whereas the instructions seem to only mention windows 7. It took me around an hour to set the thing up but in the end it does work and it works well. Firstly, the USB has to be plugged into a USB 3.0 port (the blue one), it will work in other sockets but the signal strength won’t be as strong. This could be a problem with my hardware but it seems to work really well in just one of my USB ports. Secondly, when you connect it to the internet, the instructions specify and I quote “Select your WiFi network, click connect and enter the password”. This is way too brief. You don’t just connect the computer to the internet, you have to physically open your WiFi settings, find where the device is located in your network and tell the computer to use it for the internet. Mine was called “WiFi 2”. I had to really dig around my settings to find how I could swap it over onto the device. One of the links in the small pamphlet (faq-2253.html) did help me find out where in the settings it was buried. Long story short, it does work, it is good value for money, well designed and I would buy again. The instructions for set-up is just useless unless you already have a vague knowledge of how computers work.
