The damage appears as holes of melted plastic in one or more corners of the plastic pouch. This may occur on the first time of use, and may therefore easily be mistaken for a manufacturing defect.The damage occurs when the Hottie thermal pack is unable to rotate freely. The pack does not need to become trapped to cause this damage, which may in some cases result from a very short interruption to rotation.If your microwave oven is small--17 litre or less--or your turntable is less than 25 cm diameter or rotation of the pack is impeded in any way, you should not use that microwave to heat your Hottie in the normal way.It is possible to gently roll your thermal pack and secure with an elastic band. Some customers have found this satisfactory in smaller microwaves.From March 1st 2011, we will no longer replace free of charge thermal packs which show this type of damage. Review: Works okay - Canny little thing. Heats up well. Stays hot for around 3-4 hours. It’s quite thick. It’s not overly big, (it fit in my letterbox flat for delivery). No smells coming from it at all. When I first heat it up, it wasn’t hot. I squished the thing inside a bit (like you would do with microwave rice 😂) & put it back in the microwave, was boiling when it came back out. ********EDIT…..tried it again last night, 3mins in the microwave & it only stayed hot for an hour. In the winter, we microwave one each every evening to keep us warm as we settle down to watch TV. Even better if you throw a nice warm fleecy blanket over the top too. It saves having to have the heating on too high, so they are great for anyone who feels the cold and wants to save some money on heating costs. Sometimes when it's really cold, one isn't enough to keep you completely warm, so we have 2 each available just in case! They do tend to need replacing after about a year because the covers get a bit tatty and sometimes they leak slightly after many uses. When they do leak, it's usually just a tiny amount of liquid that comes out and get absorbed into the cover, so I would say it's not really dangerous for children or the elderly. Much safer than traditional hot water bottles, and they only take 2 minutes in the microwave to heat up.
