    Nicely presented book of music but...

Although this is a nicely printed booklet of music, it's title suggests that it contains the pieces of music for the 2017-2018 grade 1 exam. However, it really only contains half the pieces allowed for the exam. The other pieces are referred to on the contents page, which is a bit of a tease.The nine pieces (divided into three lists, one piece to be chosen from each list) are varied and from different styles of music, with some very interesting options. However, you can't help feeling a little cheated out of the other nine pieces!

There are 3 pieces for each of the set lists (A, B & C) which are required for the exam. Of course, this limits you to only having 3 options to choose from for each list but that's more than enough for the exam as you only have to perform one piece for each. The songs are fun to play, with fingering and tempo suggestions. Even just as a fun exercise book, that's potentially 9 new songs to learn for each of the grades. Can't go wrong.

I don't know anything about ABRSM, but as a self-learner I find the different pieces seem to stretch my playing (the A list the hardest I find) and help me move onto subsequent levels. I guess that is the whole point of a well design course of learning, but I have found other books do not fundamentally change the musically arrangements (sorry I don't really know how to best put it). I did not buy these to do the exams, but to help me progress with my playing.
