Ideal for creating elegant, eco-friendly garden borders that bloom from spring through winter. ## Description A lovely variety of old fashioned English Lavender (introduced in 1950) but with dark purple flower spikes - stunning for large planting schemes. This is a slightly more compact variety than Lavandula angustifolia growing to about 50cm. It is very easy to cultivate but the key to its longevity is pruning. This should be done as soon as the flowers start to fade in August - they can handle a hard pruning and we recommend removing one third of the plant, not just the flower spikes. Small shoots will grow a further 5cm before the plants start to go dormant in September, giving them a lush, tidy appearance through Winter. Alternatively, you can leave the spent flower heads on the plants until spring because in winter, when food for birds is scarce, birds will come to feed on the seeds - goldfinches in particular! Plants might eventually become wooded and straggly so it is best to replace a hedge after about 20 years though this is not always necessary. Lavender prefers full sun, ideally south or west facing. It is suitable for seaside gardens and poor or moderately fertile, well drained alkaline soil. Once established they are drought tolerant and they certainly do not like to be waterlogged or to sit in wet soil - plant on a soil ridge to avoid roots sitting in wet soil. But they arrived a day early, and in excellent condition, very carefully parcelled and to my surprise Royal Mail actually handled the package very carefully! The plants themselves were small and compact, but are already growing well, and about to flower. The 9cm square pots were quite deep, and the plants had extensive roots. Each pot contained a rod to protect the plants' shoots during transit. Perhaps not a good idea if you live in a cold area, I'm in SE and very sheltered garden. **Q: Is October a good time to plant these plugs outside?** A: Unfortunately, I wasn’t very lucky with these… Went getting more mature plants, from the garden centre, and transferred them in spring. **Q: I want to make a border out of these against my fence how far apart do i plant them** A: I planted mine closer than recommended and they made a wonderful hedge. These ones are in 6cm pots and will take a long time to get to a hedge perhaps 2-3yrs. I planted mine approx.18inches apart when they were that small. I later discovered that the bigger plants, even though more expensive, were a better choice. I have tried both. **Q: how long do they flower for and when** A: They flower throughout the summer into September. They are evergreen and smell gorgeous.
