Parent's dog has this collar, they love it, but need new one. Have length, just need to know how to figure size of braided part. Many thanks.** A: Measure your dogs neck toward their torso not exactly their neck. That gives them allowance to move around. Then you can tell how long of a collar you need. My dogs measures 12 inches so I bought 16inches long. In terms of the width it depend on the weight of the dogs. I had to give him a 20" that I bought for my golden retriever. The 20 was too big for him. He got the 18" I bought for my smaller golden. I would go to a local pet store and try one on your dog. I do like the collar and it is holding well on the big guy. I walk them everyday 2.5 miles and the collar is still ok. The others are correct, the rings are small and the collars do not release like the chain does, but I don't find it chokes my dog, but he doesn't pull when we walk. When I got him he was very frightened of everything -- including taking walks. The chain was too heavy and painful in an area of his neck that had been repeatedly bruised by the chain collar. I used this nylon collar instead. It's lighter but as responsive (releases quickly) and as reliably strong as the choke chain but much easier on the dog's neck. It cleans easily; I've washed it several times (hand wash and hang over the sink to dry or just put back on the dog if I'm in a hurry to take him out) and it's still like new. Also, when my dog scratches his neck, there's no jangly sound and he doesn't get his claws caught in any chain links. Be sure to measure the dog's neck and widest part of the head. The collar should not be snug because it won't slide over the dog's head. It should also not be too loose because any quick correction made with the leash will be transmitted too late for the dog to understand what is wanted. The first one of these I ordered was too big so I kept it for back up.
