A: I’d say not at all. The flange on both sides swing down and closed.  I’ve had this trash can and lid for over a year and I do like it. I compost organic material separately.  This keeps the odor down until reasonably full.

If the description did not state that this was second hand, I would never have guessed - and that for half the price of new! The lid fits perfectly on my bin, and it was slim enough to slide in between the freezer and cupboard
