Rather than buy a new softener (expensive) or spend a day under the sink trying to work out of there was something wrong with it (not an attractive proposition), I bought a set of these strips. These showed, to my satisfaction, that the incoming water is hard, but that issuing from the taps in the house is considerably softer. This has not entirely restored marital harmony, but a sort of grudging armistice has been declared for the time being.
