The most fun I've had in ages and a wonderful teaching tool.

I bought a pack of this marvelous paper from RK, two weeks ago. I've had such success with it that I I've just ordered a second pack. There is so much you can do with this process and its so easy and safe to use I wish I had thought about it before. I'm interested in the history of photography and, over the years, have experimented with all sorts of things like pinhole cameras and photograms (using my enlarger and silver halide paper). Somehow I missed this one because I didn't know you could buy the paper off the shelf. I read somewhere in an American photo magazine that The University Of California at Berkley's hall of science was producing a commercial pack and tracked it down to a local supplier here, RK photographic. I drove down there to have a look and they were so helpful and informative that I decided to have a go for myself and bought some.It is so easy to do that I had an image in less than an hour after arriving home. The paper is thin but this is actually quite an advantage. It dries quickly and its much quicker and easier to take the next step of using the 'paper negative' you get the first time to produce a positive image and be further creative.Instead of using temperature controlled poisonous developer and fixer, all you need is a bowl of water. It is so good to be able to demonstrate 'photography' to children without any danger or staining of clothes. I've done leaves, fruit, all sorts of objects and hands. It works with old negatives to give instant positives which look really artistic due to their blue colour and slight imperfections.Compared to normal darkroom work this could not be easier. No chemicals to make, spill or go off. No temperatures or exposure times to worry about you just stick the whole shabang outdoors in the sunshine and you can watch the image appear as the uncovered areas become lighter. It doesn't work with artificial light only sunlight, must be something to do with UV which I think you can use but is dangerous.Makes me feel like a photographic pioneer.

    Good product

I've been meaning to give cyanotypes a try for ages but never got around to properly reading up on how to do it. After browsing some 'alternative photography' websites I decided that buying a pack of ready coated paper would be the easiest way to start. These 8x12inch sheets are a decent size to experiment with and I decided against getting an actual kit because I already had a sheet of thin perspex plus bulldog clips and cardboard so I couldn't see the point of paying extra for those items. In fact, if what you're hoping for is a blurred, ghostly kind of photogram image rather than one with a crisp outline, there's no need to press your material flat against the paper anyway. After following the simple and clear instructions on the back of the pack I was left with an excellent fern print. My next experiment is going to be to try toning this using washing soda and cold tea which will hopefully convert the very bright blue to a more interesting brownish colour.Although another reviewer has commented that the paper is thin it does the job and I've found it perfectly satisfactory for my purposes. It stood up well to being immersed in water during the rinsing stage and dried quickly. Anyone expecting 'photo paper' might find it a bit of a let down I guess, since it's more on a par with good quality printer paper than the thick glossy stuff used for old-fashioned photos, but it's the perfect weight to use for collage techniques and I'm looking forward to taking the basic prints a lot further using that method.
