Review: So far so good. So quiet! CMR, fast, low power. - I hate to review components like these until I've had them a long time, but now is probably the time for harddrive buying in general. First of all, to those who are wondering, no the 5640 RPM is not a typo. The official specs sheet says that's what it runs at. I think this helps it find a better balance between 5400 RPM power efficiency and 7200 RPM responsiveness. It claims to run cool and it does seem to do so. One lucky surprise is that it's quiet. A lot of larger harddrives intended for NAS or other RAID systems don't really try to be that quiet. According to the spec sheet it's officially 24dBA idle, 28dBA access. That's insane. I can't measure it with digital precision, but I can say it's one of the least annoying sounding drives I have used in a long time. Even many 5400 RPM 2.5" harddrives bother my ears these days (SSDs have spoiled me!) It doesn't seem to have quite the same "whoosh" sound of the actual platters spinning that normally bothers me if a drive is at all close enough to hear. (How did I survive harddrives in the 90s??? I don't know!) This thing is almost whisper quiet and putting my ear right up to it can still make it hard to hear. I think maybe the 5640 RPM contributes to this — likely it strikes a better balance in regards to sonic properties. My best guess is vibrations don't interfere with each other as much or something to that effect. And even the "grinding" when it's accessing data is quieter than most. I went ahead and wrote this review now in part because I just really want to emphasize how much quieter this drive is compared to most. As another piece of good news, this entire series is made with CMR — that is classic magnetic recording — rather than SMR (shingled magnetic recording.) A lot of larger drives in this sort of range use SMR because it's cheaper, but it also is significantly slower on any writes bigger than the cache size — which is probably going to be any decent sized transfers at all. I also see a lot of claims that SMR drives last significantly less actual usage hours (which might make sense since they must rewrite every single block that changes for even a small write.) Right now I have more confidence in a CMR drive to hold up past the 1.5 year mark that seems to come up a lot in reviews and complaints for SMR drives. Speeds did dip down to something like 160MB/s for the final average (instead of the 215MB/s in the specs) for a huge transfer operation, but all in all this drive strikes a lot of great balances. Only time will tell on reliability, but this is a good line.
Review: Silent mode - Very quiet HD and works perfectly for NAS applications. Fast uploads and downloads

## Features

- Available in capacities ranging from 1-14TB(1) with support for up to 8 bays | (1) 1MB = 1 million bytes, 1GB = 1 billion bytes, and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.
- Supports up to 180 TB/yr workload rate(2) | (2) Workload Rate is defined as the amount of user data transferred to or from the hard drive. Workload Rate is annualized (TB transferred ✕ (8760 / recorded power-on hours)). Workload Rate will vary depending on your hardware and software components and configurations.
- NASware firmware for compatibility
- Built for small or medium business NAS systems in a 24/7 environment
- 3-year limited warranty(3) | (3) MTBF specifications are based on a sample population and are estimated by statistical measurements and acceleration algorithms under typical operating conditions: workload of 90TB/year and drive temperature of 40°C. Derating of MTBF will occur above these parameters, up to 65°C drive temperature. MTBF does not predict an individual drive’s reliability and does not constitute a warranty. Not all products may be available in all regions of the world.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this WD Red drive backed by WD's 3-year limited warranty? I don't see it in the product description.**
A: I had an issue with some of the WD Red drives I had purchased through Amazon...
I had a failure and contacted WD for replacement under warranty...
I was told that the drive I had only had a one year warranty period not the three year.
The drive serial number started with WD and that indicated it was a drive from a single disk NAS.. those have only a one year warranty
Where the other drives carry the 3 year.
What is the difference in the drives i can not say or tell from looking at them and no other information was provided by WD.
I was told I needed to go back to the seller and see if they would fix the issue.
Since I've bought a number of drives over the last three years one at a time and registered them with WD, I didn't mark each drive and could not tell which drive came from what seller since the invoices didn't indicate the serial number of the drives.. I have 4 other drives in that situation. Since it was registered at the time I received the drive I know it was within the 3 years but after the 1 year warranty that WD would support. I had to buy a replacement.. Thing is that all the drive were in WD boxes and sealed in static bags.

**Q: Can this drive be installed into an external HD case and used as a single drive media server or does it have to be installed in a NAS case?**
A: It's designed for continuous use and not intended to be shut down and restarted on a routine basis. Those that say that they lack the performance of a desktop HD is just not true. they have similar performance characteristics with most 5200 RPM drives. One typically doesn't put a 4TB drive in a PC as a system drive. Usually, you would use a 1 TB drive that are typically 7200 RPM, which does provide better performance. If you really need that much space in your PC (system or otherwise) you're better off not using a NAS drive, something like the Seagate Barracuda.

**Q: Why is this more expensive than an external wd 10 tb drive such as: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=wd+10tb+elements+desktop+usb+3.0+external+hard+drive&re**
A: The retail storage market is more competitive. NAS and Enterprise drives meet 24/7/365 read write reliability benchmarks and typically have a 3-5 year warranty. Retail consumer drives may in some cases last as long as NAS drives, but typically will have a shorter warranty. Note that liberating a hard drive from a retail external enclosure (to use in a PC) would likely void the drives warranty altogether.

**Q: Can this drive be used to replace the internal hard drive within the apple 3tb time capsule?**
A: Depends if it uses a 2.5in or 3.5inch drive or not. Specs are probably fine but need to know what size of hard drive it takes. Based on the dimensions of the apple device, it might accommodate this. Based on the apple dimensions, I would be surprised if it uses 3.5in drives but it isn't impossible.

The 10tb works great in my nas system, no heat, but I keep my nas well vented, so I don't notice any extra heat. Easy to install, helps my growing business.
