And the intake for a 40 isnt much larger that the 10. So my guess is that it should fit about right without the rubber bands. But if not just take 2 hair rubber bands and put then in the sponge and it holds it on tight. **Q: Is this a carbon filter?** A: This is not a carbon filter. This is a pre-filter sponge that goes over the inlet tube for HOB (hang on back) filter systems to prevent baby fish/shrimp from getting sucked up the tube and into the filter. **Q: What is the ppi (porosity)?** A: I couldnt tell you how big the holes are in the sponges. But I can tell you that I use this spongs in a tank with Shrimp. I currently plenty if baby shrimp and I dont seem to have issues with the babies being pulled through the sponge and into the filter as I have a lot of them. So it is small enough holes to prevent small shrimp from going through it.
