It has hard plastic cover to protect it in your suitcase while travelling. Really small & light. You can see the clock time so easy in the night with a quick glance. The light don't eat the batteries, 2 weeks later I'm trialing mine & batteries still going strong with night light on. It has a really bright flash light on which u have to press to keep on, & I used this brilliantly when I had to alter the air con in the night as missus moaning it was too hot, so I took the clock to the air-con controls, works like a good torch without putting the apartment lights on blaring in your eyes. Only very slight negative, alarm isn't really noisy, it will wake you up, but if you have earplugs in, you may not hear it, but a lot of us have our phone alarms we can use the odd time, for when we are away. The best travel alarm clock I could find that had the very important night light on, perfect size, weight everything. Review: Clear but - I have brought two of these now and both of them the back, the clear plastic that you use to stand it up with has broken which is annoying because I like the clock. It was useful with the torch function as it is a bright light. The clock is light weight and doesn't take up much room in the suitcases. I normally set the alarm for about 3pm, this enables me to have the back light on, but not be disturbed by the alarm. I then switch off the back light/alarm when I get up. **Q: Is the time format 12 or 24 hour?** A: It can be set to either,12 or 24 hour, according to preference via a slide switch on one side. I recommend this clock, which I use as my normal alarm, which wakes be up even though I am a deep sleeper, and is compact enough, for Holidays. **Q: is the time visible at night when you wake up without touching it** A: No, there is a light button/snooze function for viewing at night. I have not used it for about a year now as the stand broke off the bottom very quickly. It is very flimsy and I would not buy another one on that basis. It also requires 3 AAA batteries to run it, which I think is excessive. Hope that helps. **Q: I like sleeping in the pitch black but need the alarm switched on. Is there an option to switch the back light off but keep the alarm on?** A: Yes. There is a switch on the back that allows flash light, night light or light off. Plus points are it's very clear and easily readable screen, the loud crescendo alarm, it's easy to set up the time & alarm and with the alarm set the display will have a low level backlight permanently on meaning not having to reach out for buttons to find out what time it is.
