I also wanted it to double as my "game night" bag, so it had to accommodate a couple D&D hardback rulebooks and an iPad. It will in fact hold a couple books, plus iPad, plus small notebooks, and has a fair distribution of pockets to hold pens and other accessories, plus a convenient phone-sized pocket in the top flap. The material is sturdy enough; the strap comfortable enough. And yet I don't find myself using it as often as I expect. When considering why, I realized it comes down to the fact there's no handle on the top of the bag: it has to be worn or carried by the strap. Fine when it can be worn, but due to my height, I have the strap fully extended, and hand carrying it in and out of vehicles or down the hall means dangling it kind of awkwardly.
