Review: You need this for your D70s or D80! - This is an actual Nikon MC-DC1. Its not a third party product. I recently bought my third Nikon D70 this time around I bought the D70s ( I love the colors the D70 and D70s produces). I go through these old bodies because I use them so much. Anyways now that I own a 70s I can take advantage of the additional port on the side for a wired remote trigger for long exposures. With the original D70 your limited to using the IR remote for long exposure work, it does work but it leaves something to be desired such as that direct link between you and the camera. To use the IR remote for exposures longer then 30 seconds on the D70,D70s,D80 and D90. Press and hold the shooting mode button and turn the rear command dial until you see the clock and remote icons appear at the same time on the top LCD, then turn the rear command dial to the left until you see "bulb" appear on the top LCD. The first press will focus the lens and open the shutter. You can leave it open for as long as you want. The second press will close the shutter. Bet you didn't know the IR remote could be used for bulb mode! Now on to my review of the Nikon MC-DC1. Nikon only used this remote shutter on the D70s and D80. Nikon switched to a larger plug on all the models after the D80. This remote shutter works exactly like the newer MC-DC2. It literally is a remote shutter button. A half press will focus the camera and a full press will take the shot. With this wired remote you can also lock the shutter button down to take long exposure shots. Of course you need to have the camera in bulb mode for this to work. The MC-DC1 looks and feels exactly like my MC-DC2 for my Nikon D7000. Thats a good thing since I have nothing bad the say about that remote shutter. The only con with the MC-DC1 is that the cord is about 4 feet long. This might be an issue for some people. But for me its fine. Over all if you have a Nikon D70s or D80 then buy this remote shutter. I prefer it over the IR remote because of its two stage button and zero risk of missing a shot because of a weak signal.
Review: Great tool for long exposures or shaky hands! - Call me Old School, but I can't understand why the camera manufacturers can't just put a threaded hole in the shutter button like they did for decades. OK, done complaining. If I had to buy a remote - and I did - this one is pretty good. I don't mind the short cord, I prefer it. Most of the time I'm using the camera on a tripod with strobes and I just need to shoot long exposures without touching the camera. Three feet is plenty: any longer and I'm tripping over it. If I need to get further away, I use the wireless remote. It looks to be very well made, the plastic feels substantial and the plug fits nice and tight in the camera's receptacle. I've used aftermarket accessories like this for my Nikons and they always look and feel a little cheesy. One complaint: there is no tactile detent for focusing before shooting. You just mash the button a little until it focuses, then press it the rest of the way. I'm sure I'll be getting a few inadvertent exposures before I get the feel for it. That's why I gave it only 4 stars. Otherwise it a great photography tool. Everybody should have one - I learned the hard way that an image that looks pretty sharp on the viewscreen can be pretty blurry.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great tool for long exposures or shaky hands!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very useful in longtime exposure and set up captures
*by W***6 on February 20, 2006*

Except for the a little bit high price and shipment fees (which is 30% of its price, btw), this is a very useful accessory for Nikon D70s or other model it can apply on. For me, this cable is extremely useful when I needed long time exposure in Manual B(ulb) mode (over 30 sec)) for city night views or astronomical shootings. It's also useful when I was waiting acrobats' "only moment": after I got everything setup and made sure they are right on the focus and things are in the depth of field, I just sit and waited and pressed. It provides half-way-down releasing press, but the response is not as quick as the body button so it is necessary to count the lag into your own capture. The plastic is a little bit "plastic"-easy to deform and leaving scratches on the surface and the cable is delicate too (I accedintally clamped it on my tripod's insert plate and almost peel out the cable coating). But since this is a genuine Nikon accessory, I am confident in its quality. If you need night photography or leisure waiting capture as I do, this would be a necessity. If you just need something to reduce vibration, use timing shooting mode or the infrared remote control, they are better because the cable will easily get into your way and cause accidents. And its length(1 meter/ 3 feet) is not long enough for you to leave the camera, and not short enough (like 60 cm / 2 feet) to get out of the way. Still, for me, it's worth the money. PS. It take quite a bit of force to plug it into the camera (and out), and it suggests the camera should be off when I do that, which I often forgot.
