It has a chunk bronze clasp.Perhaps that doesn't really sell it enough. For a quirky, bohemian book in which to record your thoughts, this has got oodles of character and charm. It is exactly right for the right application.The paper is somewhat porous. You can write in it fairly well with a broad nibbed italic fountain pen, but it is not an especially smooth writing experience. A regular fountain pen will tend to blotch on the extremes. You could, of course, write on it with a ball point, gel pen or what have you, but it seems to me that this would be slightly losing the point of the book. A Rotring art pen would be my recommendation.If you need to, you can rebind the book by undoing the shoelace.
