They are real wax, the flame is plastic and doesn't move. The flickering is OK, more dimming than flickering. So let me start off by saying I have been through various brands of flameless candles. There have been some good - and some bad. The last ones that I purchased were from Hobby lobby and they would last on Two AA batteries for about two weeks. It was really difficult to turn them on / off yas ou have to flip them over and hit the switch etc. These candles are real wax, they look authentic and very realistic with the flicker option. Every candle worked perfectly right out of the box - and the remote is sooooo convenient. Be careful when you order these however because the remote is stuck inside of the packaging - I missed it first. I double check that both of them were switched to “ON” they both were... had just put new batteries in all of them... thought maybe the batteries weren’t good... they had two different kinds of batteries in them so it wasn’t the specific batch of batteries that I was thinking.... put brand new batteries in both of the candles that refused to light... and they still aren’t working... I’m very disappointed...
