You can record over the messages. We had one of these a few years ago and it was wonderful. The last one I purchased the volume was not good. If you get one like our first phone it was great and the kids loved it. If they are all like the last one I purchased I would not buy it again. **Q: Can this hold up to some drool? What kind of batteries does it take?** A: This phone was a big disappointment I wouldn’t be buying it **Q: can i turn up the volume?** A: Hi Melanie, The volume is set to a level that is perfect for tiny ears (and also just right for grown-up ears). For now, there's no way to adjust it yourself on this toy.
