It is important to choose the right pump for your system as incorrect selection can mean the pump will not work. Positive Head Pump? A gravity-fed system can be either positive head or negative head, based on the natural water flow rate in the home. In a positive head system, the water flow rate is at least 2L/min (1L in 30 seconds) due to gravity. These systems are compatible with a positive head pump. If the flow rate is less than 1L in 30 seconds from all outlets to be pumped, a negative (universal) head pump is required. Universal pumps work in both positive and negative head systems, so if you're unsure, choose a universal pump. Alternatively, to determine if a positive head pump is suitable, measure the height between the base of the cold-water storage tank and the highest point in the system after the pump. If this distance exceeds 600 mm, a positive head pump is appropriate. To measure flow rate, place a jug under a fully open tap or shower and time how long it takes to fill to 1L. Twin or Single? Bought 2 in the space of a year, failed miserably. **Q: I have a gravity fed system for cold and hot water. I need pump for hot water to increase pressure. Can I use a twin pump and only connect the hot?** A: You cannot use a twin pump to only pump the hot water, you would need to pump the hot and cold water with a twin pump. **Q: My current pump is so loud even in the cupboard we cannot hear each other talk , is this pump quiet enough to talk next to?** A: We had the same problem until it stopped working after 18 months approx. I used spares from a previous pump to make one good pump as Salamander would not supply spares. I will not buy another Salamander pump, ever, as their customer service is shocking.
