You'll have the best attraction to iron or low-carbon steel. To most stainless steel they will have virtually no attraction. I read comments from others that range from "great" to "don't work" and it is clear that we are comparing apples and oranges. If I attach one of these magnets to my welding table to hold down its cover in the wind, I will have to use a hammer to tap the magnet towards the edge of the table to then pry it off. Note that these magnets are brittle. Do not let one slam against a ferrous surface. I have cracked one magnet that way. Not the fault of the manufacturer. Just that these are magnets and are not made for impact strength. So to wrap it up, know that your mileage will vary depending on how close to pure iron the surface is.
