I had a 2" hole in the wall left by a TV install. I saw the videos. i could put a supporting piece of wood screwed in behind the wall and a small science projec later I have a patchable wall. This allows you to bypass all that effort and time to get an immediate surface to apply joint compound/spackle or whatever and voila you have a repaired wall. All I had to then was sand it and use some of that spray texture and you can hardly tell there was ever a hole.
