Review: Full Dolby Atmos Experience with Onkyo's - FYI: I believe the Onkyo SKH-410(B) speakers have been discontinued. This Review is more about highlighting the benefits of Up-Firing Dolby Atmos Speakers based on my own experiences. My Denon 4K Home Cinema Receiver features 7.2 Channels. I really wanted my Home Cinema System to produce an improved immersive 3D Audio experience by using Up-Firing Dolby Atmos Enabled Speakers. My Base 7.2 Audio setup uses a Cambridge Audio SX-70 Centre speaker, 6x JBL Control One Speakers for the Front L+R / Front L+R Height 1 / Surround L+R and a Yamaha NS-SW200 Subwoofer. The JBL Control One speakers, although not really for serious Hi-Fi, are ideal Home Cinema speakers producing clear, sharp audio as well as delivering punchy Bass. This is quite impressive considering their relatively small size and price (On offer - £49 for a pair). To experience an improved immersive 3D Audio, I intended to exchange the JBL Front L+R Height 1 speakers with Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers, which would sit on top of the JBL Front L+R speakers. The issue here is that the Atmos Speakers needed to have a smaller footprint than the JBL speakers. Also, I didn’t want to spend a small fortune on Dolby Atmos speakers, just in case their performance enhancements were disappointing or non-existent. After some research, it was only a pair of Onkyo SKH-410(B)’s which met the required criteria. They had a smaller footprint than the JBL’s and just over £100 / pair. The Onkyo SKH-410(B) speakers are about half the size of my JBL Control 1’s (still capable of max 100W), whilst the top fabric speaker grills are not designed to be removed. These speakers may not look that special but the build quality / finish is pretty good, whilst featuring the all-important Certified Dolby Atmos, Special Network Internals. I replaced my JBL Front L+R Height 1 speakers with these Onkyo’s, which were placed on top of the JBL Front L+R speakers. Then it was a matter of updating the Denon’s speaker configuration to utilise the Onkyo speakers. I used the Audyssey Speaker-Room Calibration microphone, as well as measuring and setting the ceiling height above the Dolby speakers (setting option for Dolby Enabled speakers only). I read somewhere that Dolby Atmos Up-Firing speakers need to be positioned above ear level for best performance and these Onkyo’s need to have a minimum distance of 90 cm between them and the ceiling. My Home Cinema System is now 5.1.2 featuring Onkyo Front L+R Height 1 / Up-firing Dolby Atmos Speakers. All I can say is the immersive 3D Audio enhancements delivered by these little Onkyo speakers was a very worthwhile and impressive upgrade. I was so impressed that in March 2020, I decided to buy another pair of Onkyo SKH-410(B)’s. As previously stated, my Denon 4K Home Cinema Receiver features 7.2 Channels but processes 9.2 Channels. I decided to add a TIBO-PA150 Stereo Power Amp to my Denon system, which was plugged into the Denon Surround L+R Height 2 Pre-Outs. I could now add the 2nd pair of Onkyo Dolby Atmos speakers which were placed on top of the JBL Surround L+R speakers. Obviously, the Audyssey Speaker-Room Calibration needed to be updated. My Home Cinema System is now 5.1.4 and I have to say the immersive 3D Audio Experience is awesome. I have now viewed a few Dolby Atmos Movies on both 4K & Blu-Ray formats. “Blade Runner - The Final Cut” (4K), sounds impressive and immersive with its wealth of wonderful atmospheric sounds, music (by Vangelis) and noise complexities. For the Helicopter experience turn up the volume, fast forward 24 mins into Sicario (Blu-Ray), this is a real treat albeit short lived so deserves a replay or two. The Helicopter scenes towards the end of Mission Impossible: “Fallout” (Blu-Ray), certainly gives fabulous rotor sounds from above. If you want to be blown away with some amazingly intense audio excitement coming from everywhere then give “Jupiter Ascending” (Blu-Ray) a go. “Alita - Battle Angel” (4K) is another Movie that sounds great in Dolby Atmos, especially during the Motorball Challenges where the Commentary and Collisions really hit High places. The ultimate Helicopter attack scene in Francis Ford Coppola’s, “Apocalypse Now-Final Cut” (4K), sounds amazing, against the backdrop of Wagner’s, “Ride of the Valkyries”. These Onkyo Dolby Atmos Speakers can deliver unsophisticated immersive sound enhancements requiring the correct Sound Output settings to make the Onkyo’s work in a non-Dolby Atmos mode as well as being compatible with DTS:X Audio. There are a couple of Dolby Atmos 1080.mp4 Trailers (Leaf & Amaze), Downloadable from the Official Dolby website, which demonstrate the wonderful, immersive 3D experience Dolby Atmos Enabled Speakers provide. The Thunder Sounds featured in the “Amaze” Trailer are just Spectacular and the Best I have ever Heard on a Home Cinema System. Only Nature does it Better. I would say these speakers are fine in small rooms, like mine, but in Larger Rooms, with a speaker to ceiling height in excess of 330 cm may not achieve any noticeable or worthwhile Dolby Atmos Experience. That said, I am well pleased with these Onkyo Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers, representing an excellent upgrade to my Home Cinema System. Up-firing speaker technology may not be as good as Dolby Atmos speakers fitted in the ceiling but does offer an effective 3D immersive audio experience with minimal hassle. These Onkyo SKH-410(B)’s have improved the Audio experience from my Home Cinema and fully deserve my 5 Star Review. bjohnk
Review: Good value Quality Dolby Atmos Speakers - I was initially in two minds about buying these Onkyo Atmos speakers mainly because the alternative Dobly Atmos speakers are so much more expensive. I need not have worried! As with all Onkyo products in my experience the quality is a very high standard and offer excellent value for money. So whilst they are a little larger than I expected, they are quite heavy and have a good solid feel about them. They look good sat on the front floor standing Mission tower speakers. You may think (like me) you are satisfied with an existing 5.1 speaker set up, however with the addition of these speakers you will notice a subtle yet noticeable improvement to the sound field which for me now seems more immersive. Excellent quality and superb value for money.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this the price for a pair of the speakers?**
A: Yes, you get a pair of speakers, plus two speaker cables and 8 small rubber feet, to stop the vibration when placed on top your front or rear speakers.

**Q: Why are they described as Dolby Atmos enabled? If they are passive speakers surely they are just two speakers pointing upwards?**
A: only atmos will send the correct signal to them, it is'nt just the same signal as the other speakers only pointing upwards.

**Q: Can I have these speakers wall mounted and the speaker pointing down towards the listener?**
A: Even though it does say so on the instructions, you can. That’s how I have mine set up. I got mine in a room with vaulted ceiling and have them pointing down towards the seating area. I had to glue the bracket to a different area of the speaker to achieve the angle I wanted but it works great in an Atmos set up.

**Q: Hi, can anyone tell me what Ohms these speakers are please?**
A: Yes 8 Ohms.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Entry level speakers in Atmos content
*by F***E on 22 May 2019*

These Onkyo Atmos speakers are pretty good, they certainly are not exceptional but they fill a price point that has few existing products. Apart from these you are looking at alternatively speakers which are more than three times their cost. They sound pretty good, however, I’ve only tested them with TrueHD Atmos Bluray content via a Denon AVR-X2500H, and not listened to music on them in multi-channel stereo. So judging them compared to other traditional speakers is a little difficult. As said above, you can certainly get better, but for significantly more cost and better speakers are also usually larger. Their size is good and fit well on bookshelf speakers, Denon, Onkyo and other front small/large speakers. Their build quality is quite good, nothing to write home about, but also no particular negatives. As for do they do what they are suppose to do? I’ve found this completely dependant on the content you watch, if it’s not Atmos (TrueHD, DD+), with the Atmos logo visible on your receiver then they do absolutely nothing (why did you buy them??). Futhermore, some Atmos content seems to utilise height speakers better than other content. And if you set theses up correctly using Audyssey I would say they do help to expand the audio stage. whilst true Atmos height speakers installed in your ceiling would probably produce audio that sounds more realisticly above you, better than these do, the audio does sound as if it’s elevated to some degree and not all coming from the front left/right, where these are positioned. However, again you need to make sure you've setup Dolby Atmos Height speakers in your receiver correctly ideally using Audyssey and if your ceiling is not flat, don't bother with these. Don't by these as traditional speakers, that is not what they were designed for! For the cost these speakers are quite good, especially to give one an idea and experience of Atmos even if it’s not the best experience possible, and without breaking the bank. Lastly Audyssey states that they recommend the speakers are placed 1.8m below your ceiling, as apparently this is best.
