## Description

Perfect for beginning stargazers, this tabletop reflector telescope is not a toy! With its substantial, 100mm (3.9") aperture parabolic glass primary mirror boasting a 400mm focal length, the compact Orion SkyScanner 100mm TableTop Reflector telescope will amaze you and your family with gorgeous, detailed views of the night sky. With this capable reflector, you can study the Moon's cratered surface in detail, exploring highland mountains and vast, planar lunar "seas" of dark material. Bright planets like Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars shine brightly in the SkyScanner 100, even when viewing from urban locations. And the pint-sized SkyScanner 100 can gather enough light for views of open and globular star clusters, bright cloudy nebulas, and even a few distant galaxies. Set the compact SkyScanner 100 on table in the back yard, or even on the hood of your car in the backcountry, and comfortably view the heavens to your heart's content. No table available? You can easily attach the SkyScanner 100's altazimuth base to any field tripod equipped with a standard 3/8" threaded post. Thanks to its small stature, the SkyScanner 100 makes a great grab-and-go telescope for road trip adventures, camp-outs, and just carrying to the local park. The SkyScanner features a rack-and-pinion focuser that makes it easy to dial in sharp focus. The included 4-element 20mm and 10mm eyepieces provide 20x and 40x magnifying power, respectively. Both eyepieces have threaded barrels to allow use of Orion filters, including the glare-reducing Moon filter that comes with the telescope. The EZ Finder II red dot scope helps with finding your target object. You also get Orion's MoonMap 260 - a wonderful reference to help you identify some 260 lunar features as you observe them. An excellent, portable, easy-to-use telescope at an affordable price, the Orion SkyScanner 100mm TableTop Reflector is an ideal beginner's telescope capable of providing hours of family fun exploring the cosmos.

Review: First telescope - Excellent if you're starting out. Would recommend purchasing a 2 x Barlow and 5 x Barlow for the 1.25" 10ml eyepiece provided (Plossl lens). EZ finder was simple setup - Find the top of something tall nearby to calibrate the aim, works as intended. Great value, compact size and easy operation. Very good value for money.
Review: Nice telescope to introduce children to the sky at night - Nice starter telescope. Well made, well packaged with concise, easy-to-understand instructions. EZ Finder makes it a lot easier to aim the telescope at a star or planet. As it is a Dobsonian reflector telescope, it does not take up much space when not in use. Of course for less than 90 pounds you are not getting the Hubble telescope.

## Features

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice telescope to introduce children to the sky at night

Nice starter telescope. Well made, well packaged with concise, easy-to-understand instructions. EZ Finder makes it a lot easier to aim the telescope at a star or planet. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not perfect, but a fantastic scope... just a few minor quibbles!
*by R***K on 15 May 2019*

This is really a 3.8 star review from me... perhaps my rating is a little lower than average, but this is my 6th scope (I have 1 a 10" Newt, an 8" SCT, a Nexstar 6, and 2 Maks). I am not a beginner, so I'm a little harder to please! Firstly, it's a fantastic package for the price, since this scope costs about the same as one of my Vixen VL eyepieces! First bad, there was too much grease on the focuser; my concern is some may have dripped on to the secondary mirror; anyway, I wiped off as much excess grease as possible. Next, the open end of the tube is not quite round, but a little squashed or oval... I can tell by the fit of the plastic main tube cap. The primary mirror is fixed, and can not be collimated. According to my laser, I estimate alignment to be 7-8 out of 10 out of the box. I will dot/doughnut the primary so I can at least raise that figure to a 8-9/10. The Red Dot Finder had no battery in it, but after a new CR2032 it worked and I actually aligned the finder..... (hardly needed since at x20 power I can point the scope freehand accurately enough). The 2 included eyepieces are adequate, but if you buy Svbony eyepieces (around £40) you do improve the end result. In fact all the optics are good, including the parabolic primary. If you remove the Main scope from its mount, I found I could mount it directly onto a photographic tripod (Manfrotto Carbon Befree tripod plate screws straight into the dovetail plate). My best view is through a TeleVue Radians 14mm, and it is interesting to note that better eyepieces always upgrade the image over the stock ones included. The reason I bought the scope is to have something small enough to check in as hand luggage on flights to darker skies than I have at home! Overall size is very good, and overall view straight out-of-box is very good. This could improve even further with some expert TLC; I just collimated the secondary with a number 2 Allen screw. I saw the Ring nebula, M57; faint and ghostly, and one needs to know what to look for... but doable (just) with this 4" primary. My advice is to go for it!! Update: A fast F/4 scope like this has quite a lot of star "coma" aberration inherent in its optics around the edges. This scope is no exception, and stars around the edge of the field are certainly not pinpoints of light... but the scope remains fair to good overall. I find the focus mechanism a little crude, and even a little too wobbly, but tightening a couple of screws helps maintain the focus setting with heavier eyepieces which tend to make it creep. The best feature of this scope is small size and portability... and it certainly looks quite cute sitting on a coffee table; and could become a good topic of conversation for your guests. I did see the cloud belts on Jupiter (and all 4 Galilean moons) tonight, but my Vixen VL-4mm eyepiece pushed the scope too far (x100) and the cloud belts were actually clearer in the VL-6mm at x66 magnification. I must say this was only just doable... but Jupiter, though at opposition, is poorly positioned with too much atmospheric interference since it is only 16 degrees above the horizon. It's a good 4" first scope, and consider a 5" or 6" diameter scope (you will see more and you will pay more). Further update July 2019: Having just returned from Greece with this scope in my backpack (tube only weighs about 1.2 kg) I can report on my holiday night viewing. Jupiter's cloud belts were much clearer since it was positioned higher in the sky. Saturn's rings came out nicely.. again its positioned much higher in the sky than in the UK. Sagittarius and Scorpio were magnificent targets.. M4 next to Antares was a massive spectacle of a globular cluster and this part of the sky was a joy to behold. Ptolemy' s cluster (M7) a wonder which is so low on the horizon that it's rarely viewable from the UK. Hence the joy of travelling South 20° or so. It really positions the ecliptic higher in the sky and improves planetary views no end. A good travel scope.. I am soon going to compare this Orion to and review a Celestron C5 (A 5" SCT spotting scope).
