### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Everyone who lives in southeast Texas should read this book

If you are interested in southeast Texas history, this book is for you. Wonderful insight into life in and around the sawmill communities.I just wish the author had been able to provide more history on a wider variety of sawmill towns. The primary focus seems to be on Wiergate with other towns mentioned from time to time.Sometimes I could picture people fishing in the mill ponds, or visiting the company store, as the detail in this book is well done.

    East Texas history

I am not a native of East Texas but since I've lived here for some time I've been accumulating books on the history of the area. The logging history of the area is atrocious but it's actually no worse than that of the Northwest where they took all the best Sequoias or Louisiana where they harvested all of the Cypress. I love living here and would have liked to see some of the mature Long Leaf pines. The only Long Leaf pines we see now are small pockets of immature trees - nothing like is must have been years ago. Will we ever learn not to destroy our heritage?

This is a fascinating read and a book with invaluable information. I've read it more than once, which is rare for me. For those who want to know life in the East Texas logging camps, this is the source. Read and share with others!Lois G. Shrout
