That top line is 14 ounces. 16 ounces of water fills the glass right up flat to the rim. This glass should not be labelled as a 2-cup measuring device, in my opinion. But it has an incredibly large number of marks, and so long as I was careful to sight from level so that the _bottom_ of the surface water layer aligned with the _top_ of the black marker line for a particular measurement it calibrated as quite accurate. My method was to weigh water required to fill it to a particular line with an accurate scale. 236.6 grams of water for one cup. **Q: Do the measuring marks wear off, or come off in the dishwasher?** A: I have had one of these exact ones for many, many, many years and it is only now having some issues with marks coming off. It is only occasionally put in the dishwasher. I would suggest always handwashing and not with any kind of abrasive sponge. Treat it well and it will last a very long time. I am only now replacing mine even though the marks I most use are still pretty visible. **Q: how wide is the beaker at the base and at the top?** A: Top is 3 1/4 inches. Bottom 2 1/4 inch.
