The ProFlora u501 uses disposable co2 cylinders for ease of use but can be converted to a refillable system with the use of the JBL ProFlora Adapt u-m if required. How it works: The ProFlora u501 CO2 System diffuses CO2 into the aquarium water providing plants with vital carbon dioxide which is the primary nutrient required for photosynthesis. Strong, healthy plant growth has many advantages including providing vital oxygen for aquarium inhabitants, reducing algae growth, removing pollutants, providing hiding places for fish and also reducing pathogens. Easy to install: The JBL u501 CO2 System comes complete and ready to use. Simply screw the pressure regulator onto the u500 CO2 Cylinder, then connect the pressure reducer with the hose to the diffuser in the aquarium. The CO2 will then enter the aquarium and is dissolved in the water as it is released via the diffuser. The CO2 supply can be interrupted at night by adding a solenoid valve (not included) if required. Safe: The JBL ProFlora u500 Disposable CO2 Cylinders are TÜV tested and come equipped with an over pressure relief. Thanks to the check valve no water can enter the cylinder. Plants are responding to this addition but not in a dramatic way. Before CO2 I was using liquid carbon so this seems to be just a bit better but not to the degree some describe. One of the noticeable effects is on the lowering of the ph, from 7.5 to 6.5 within the first day of use.The system was easy to setup and has everything you need to start. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Poor needle valve spoils the kit *by E***Q on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 May 2018* I already had a Fluval 88g for my nano tank, so decided to try this for the community tank. As I have to manually start and top the Fluval already, not having a solenoid isn't problem.You do get a fair amount for your money - CO2 tank, regulator, bubble-counter, reactor, CO2 test kit, daily and weekly fertilizers. At least in the UK, replacement CO2 is reasonably priced at about £15 for 600g in any shop selling welding supplies.I liked the CO2 reactor, it seems to achieve 100% diffusion into the water unlike ceramic discs where many bubbles reach the surface and are lost.To me the biggest downside of this unit is the very poor control with the needle valve. You have so start with too many bubbles then reduce, but if you go too far then opening the valve a small amount doesn't do anything. You have to open it a lot, then start reducing again. Even the much cheaper Fluval 88g has a more precise valve.
