I put it on and just nursed and would use it each time I nursed and my nipples healed and it didn't hurt at all anymore. I got more and used them continuously for the first month and then one day I decided to not wear them and I never had to use them since. I believe it helped my son learn to latch correctly and got past the sensitivity time of my nipples. I ended up breastfeeding for 2 years and 2 months. I believe these are a breastfeeding saver and major helper during the first month of breastfeeding. Other people may not have to use them for a whole month straight or some may have to use them for longer but either way I believe they are a must if you have some trouble which most women tend to. You don't have to go through the pain of cracking nipples and bleeding just use these and you won't have that problem. Make sure you get the right size though. If so, when and how did you do it?** A: If you aren't able to wean off the shield, don't worry. You can continue using it for as long as you need to, even all the way. I've been using it since the beginning, for 4 months now. I kept trying to wean off of it at the beginning but we were both getting too frustrated, so I gave up. She's starting to bite now so I'm glad I have the shield!Update: 10 and a half months now, and still using the shield. No problems whatsoever, milk supply has been great, the baby is doing great. She has teeth now so I'm REALLY glad I have the shield! **Q: Are these hard or soft flexible shields?** A: I wouldn't say they are hard at all. They hold their shape, but are soft to the touch Easy to move and make fit onto you. There are a few ways to put it on I found that pressing the tip down so it goes into itself then placing in you and when it pulls itself back to its original shape it draws you into it. these have been a life saver for me!! **Q: Does this shield have the cut out? The picture shows a standard one however the description says contact.** A: The one we received did NOT have a cut out. The one from the hospital did. After a few uses we couldn't tell the difference using it **Q: If I use 19mm falanges for pumping will these work for me?
