The bad reviews for this item complaining of the smell have clearly purchased this without doing any research. Natural unrefined Shea butter has no synthetic fragrances, it is a natural butter that does smell quite strong and takes some getting used to. It smells earthy, nutty, and yes it can be quite pungent but you get used to it and it’s worth it because it is so amazing for your skin. It can obviously feel greasy when you first put it on but it soaks in fairly quick. Stinks like vomit and turpentine! This terrible smell is a sign that the shea butter is rancid, and should not be used.Good quality, unrefined shea butter should have an earthy scent, along with smokiness which is due to the extraction process. It should NOT have a disgusting petrol/turpentine/vomit stink.This arrived in a big tub so I scooped some out using a clean spatula and placed it in a smaller container for ease of use. The horrible smell became apparent and out of concern I did some research and found this batch was rancid.I bought this to treat my eczema and dry skin in general as I wanted a natural product that would be easy to apply and stay solid at room temperature. I usually use coconut oil for all-round moisturisation but during hotter weather it's not so convenient as it doesn't remain solid.
