The aim of this is to provide a high-quality telescope which, despite the extremely affordable price, can already convey impressive success on the first steps of the discovery of the hobby astronomy. The GalileoScope is a telescope or refractor: a long tube with a large lens at the front end and a small lens at the back end. This design is based on the great Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, whose telescopes were also refractors. However, some important points have been improved in the GalilleoScope compared to the 400-year-old design. While Galileo's telescopes were still struggling heavily with chromatic aberration, a colour defect that occurred on the edge of bright astronomical objects, the GalileoScope already has an achromatic lens: in the early 17th century, scientists found that the combination of lens pairs from different materials minimized the color defects. The telescope is largely made of precisely fitting ABS plastic parts (the main lens of the lens is made of glass), which can be assembled within minutes by small children under the instructions of an adult. I built my GalileoScope about a year ago. A dextrous 8-9 year old could do this with some significant help from a dextrous adult. It WAS fun to assemble. Given that the barrel comes in two pieces, and is held together with sturdy o-rings, after a bit of use I chose to use packing tape to reinforce it. For its price, the optics are good. I can see moons of Jupiter, rings of Saturn, though they are so small, it was underwhelming. My only concern is that focusing is accomplished with a sliding motion, a bit difficult to hone in on that point of sharpest focus.
