I had one in SoCal. But left it with my house when I sold it. I purchased one for my new home in a different state and it fits the valve here too. I would recommend getting a carabiner clip to attach it to the meter rather than the cheap zip tie provided. In case you need to use it, the carabiner is quick release. You'd have to be stronger than a zip tie to tear it off the pipe and then use it. **Q: what is the size of the slot?** A: This tool has two different size slots. Designed for two different gas valves. One end is 1 3/8" long x 3/4" wide and the slot on the other end is 1 3/8" long X 1/2" wide. It is made of heavy stock and is well made. **Q: How long is the tool itself? My gas meter valve is hard to turn....** A: 12" ….for less that $4 it is good buy. If your meter is hard to turn off you might want to report it to your gas utility as it would be a concern for them also. & and the fire dept. **Q: Ok to store outdoors near meter?** A: You must consider if this wrench could or will be stolen or played with by children or others. If no one will disturb the wrench then it is a great idea. Next you must consider protecting it from the weather (at least I would) so it does not rust. Maybe a plastic zip lock bag, large clear plastic jar with easy to remove top??? I have my wrench hanging on the wall inside the garage near the back door next to a fire extinguisher. My gas meter can easily be seen from the street/sidewalk so I don't want to tempt someone to fool with it or come on my property to investigate the odd object. Just make sure it will fit your shutoff valve before you order. I've taught my family to evaluate the house after a strong quake, and to shut down the utlities if things are bad. By bad I mean gas leaking in the kitchen, or water coming from a broken pipe in the wall. I attached this with the included zip tie directly to the gas meter, so it's handy.The only problem I've had is neighbor kids breaking off the original from the side of my house some years ago. This one is pretty much like the first one, the single included zip tie is plastic, and can weaken and degrade quickly due to weathering. I replaced it with a couple of actual nylon zip ties, so it should last a lot longer, and be a bit tougher for young kids to remove. But if you have a lot of kids around, consider putting this somewhere higher where they can't get to it. I would not leave it IN your house, because after a quake you may not be able to get in and get it.If you get one of these, remember it's only part of gas safety.
