The upper shaft is adjustable and the longest length without the basket attached is 31". Without the basket attached, it can be used as a walking stick. Typically, I detach the basket section, put it into my backpack and use it as a walking stick in shallow water where the clay is slippery. The hardened steel point digs into the clay just enough. When I reach the fossil grounds, I attach the basket. A very fine tool for a very reasonable price. I keep several for guests. **Q: How to put the top on , I can get the lever to move?** A: The lever is a flip lever. It should easily flip open with thumb pressure.
