## Description

From the bestselling author of Jews Don’t Count ‘ A hugely heartfelt, funny, kind, fascinating, human and clever book ’ ALAIN DE BOTTON ‘ Magnificent. Breathtaking. And shockingly rare … another one-sitting wonder’ STEPHEN FRY David Baddiel would love there to be a God. He has spent a lot of time fantasising about how much better life would be if there actually was such a thing as a Superhero Dad who chased off Death. Unfortunately for him, there isn’t. Or at least, that is Baddiel’s view in this book, which argues that it is indeed the very intensity of his, and everyone else’s, desire for God to exist that proves His non-existence. Anything so deeply wished-for we will, considers Baddiel, make real. The admission of his own divine yearnings makes for a book that is more vulnerable – and more understanding of the value and power of religion – than most atheist polemics. A philosophical essay that utilises Baddiel’s trademarks of comedy, storytelling and personal asides, The God Desire offers a highly readable new perspective on the most ancient of debates. David Baddiel's book 'The God Desire' was a Sunday Times bestseller w/c 17-04-2023.

Review: Excellent read - Love DBs writing and this is no exception. He gives an honest and well argued dialogue of his views composed creativity. Very entertaining. Hard to put down
Review: “The living are just the dead on holiday” - A decent little book and a one-sitting read. It’s a succinct and well-articulated stance on whether God exists. Although Baddiel readily admits his own desire, and touches on his neurosis regarding mortality, the conclusion is reluctant but firm no. There are plenty of different perspectives and the commentary freewheels across topics such as conspiracy theories, nature, quantum physics and the after-life. He’s less aggressive than other well-known vocal atheists and is frequently amusing, in that typical Baddiel style. At one point he likens religion to a spiderman cosplay convention where you wish for and create the ‘reality’ you want! There’s a satisfying final chapter which concludes humans probably just need to believe in something greater than ourselves, whether these are religious gods or royal deities, such as the Queen. An enjoyable read, pushing many intellectual angles and far less heavy going than other atheist books. 4/5

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Enjoyed it hugely – even though I disagree
*by M***Y on 20 January 2026*

I really enjoyed the book! Baddiel writes with warmth, self-deprecating humour, and none of the aggressive atheist edge. His personal reflections on fear, Jewish identity, and ambivalence make it feel intimate and thoughtful rather than preachy. It's engaging from start to finish and left me smiling and pondering. Highly recommended - even if you end up disagreeing with him.
