The reason they probably worked (in my view) is as follows: I was getting a heel blister possibly because a prominence on my heel meant that all the friction required to lift the shoe heel off the ground at each step was concentarted locally on the prominence and therefore focused too much of the shear force between my outer skin and subcutaneous area, leading to a breakdown of fascia and consequent blister.
