I use a second (ancient) Android phone to provide a semi-permanent display. It is a breeze to set up with Home Assistant. I use cheap Kirkland AA batteries from Costco. I don't think they last the advertised 2 years, but they certainly last... The only minor problem I had was intermittent connection that suddenly appeared, and didn't go away even after replacing with fresh batteries. The problem turned out to be the battery terminals within the battery sensor enclosure which weren't making contact properly.
