Three small batteries are the power source for the lamp. They are included when purchased. There is not a USB connection. **Q: Is the cushion (under/attached to the hard surface/top) at least 3.5 inches at its thickest part?** A: About 3 inches. The filling can be shifted in whatever position, to one side, to the back or to the front to level it on an uneven surface, example, on the lap etc. I use a 17 inch laptop on it.
