It was quite stable for my setup. Because I had a section of ceiling that was lower in one spot (so the entire rod had to clear it), I didn't quite have enough height on one end to balance it out. Instead I mounted one end to the wall with a cheap metal L-bracket (and zip tied the rod to that). So my setup was really only using one of the vertical bars. At first, I didn't have the vertical bar segments twisted tight, so it was a little wobbly. But once I realized that after clicking the pieces together you need to do a clockwise twist on them, the connections were good.
