Review: Possibly Maiden's final studio album of their long and legendary career? - I've been a fan of Iron Maiden ever since 1985, when I randomly bought 'Live After Death' on cassette tape based purely on the cover art alone. I was 11 years old. And I was so blown away by the music that they instantly became my favorite band and still are to this very day. I've seen them live five times, and I happen to like ALL of Maiden's albums. Even the Blaze ones. So let's get to the topic at hand. This 2015 album, 'The Book Of Souls'. I must get the one negative out of the way from the outset: The final song on the album. The song that happens to be by far the longest song on the CD: "Empire Of The Clouds". I just cannot get into this song. Not because of its length, but because the entire piece just doesn't sound like Iron Maiden. The very prominent piano in this song, along with its arrangement makes it sound as if it's not even a Maiden song. Just my opinion on a single track folks! Now, leaving that one little issue behind, what we have here with 'The Book Of Souls' album is total awesomeness my friends. And it warrants a five-star rating! It's everything you'd expect from Maiden, and more. It is mind-blowingly good. And what particularly strikes a chord with me about this album is the fact that all of the band members were 60 years old or at least in their very late 50s during the recording of this. AND YET, they still display major talent and creativity on this album - which we would expect of course - but more than that, when you listen to this album, you can tell that the guys were VERY inspired on this one. The feeling you get when hearing this album is that the guys were attempting to practically out-do all their previous albums. I mean, you can really sense the vibe that they were in while recording this: that all six members were just full-on and really into it. And I emphasize this fact only because it is so extremely rare for any aging band to still possess the level of talent and inspiration and substance that the guys in Maiden have display on this album. When thinking of all their post-2000 albums, this could even be considered as possibly being "the best" one. All songs on this album tend to be long - which is a cool Maiden tradition of course - but this album ran so long that it took two discs to fit it all on. So it is a "double CD" album. But once again, I cannot begin to even describe how inspired and powerful these songs are. And knowing that they could release something this amazing at their age, makes you love the songs even more. Because the passion is just flowing through everything! It really sounds like they put forth every bit of talent they possibly could, along with some very cool inventive moments on the guitars that we really haven't heard before from them. And as far as Bruce's vocals go, I will say that on this record, he has obviously opted for a somewhat noticeable "deeper tone", while not really doing the high-pitched ranges anymore. However, he pulls his vocals off really well and it sounds excellent. Bottom line: If you have been hesitant to buy this album at all, just get it immediately. As for my subject title, I'll explain: This album almost sounds like they were WANTING this to be their final album. As if they wanted to "go out on a very strong note" so to speak. I could be wrong of course, but it took five years after 'The Final Frontier' to put this album out, and at this point, another five years have also gone by, and I haven't heard even the slightest news or talk from the band about going back into the studio at all. And then with all these unprecedented Covid-19 laws, it even gives stronger reason to believe that this MIGHT BE their final album. I know fans don't like this kind of talk very much, but we all have to keep in mind that NOTHING lasts forever. Maiden are eternal though. Their legacy will still be alive a hundred years from now. I truly believe that. Up the Irons!
Review: not their best, but certainly not awful .... (re-evaluation) actually it may be their best - Lots of conflicting reviews here. I like this album, it is iron maiden doing what they do. the naysayers are saying bruce does't sound good, there are no guitar solos, it's muddy and worst of all boring. bruce is nearly sixty years old guys! perhaps in spots the vocals aren't as strong, but they certainly aren't bad. if you take into account his age and the style of vocal he has, they are damn good. there are plenty of guitar leads, and they aren't awful. the sound of the album is what it is, it could be better but it again certainly isn't awful. i don't think the album is boring. i do think a couple of tracks go on longer than they need to, but that is sometimes an issue with this style of music. in reality i think maiden have been trying to reach the heights of hallowed be thy name since crafting that masterpiece. sometimes they achieve it and sometimes they don't, but hey it's worth shooting for. some of the switches are a little clunky would be main negative comment. for me the stand out tracks are if eternity should fail, and empire of the clouds. it's not that the others are bad, just that on first listen those two grabbed me. there seems to be a lot of moaning that "modern" maiden isn't as good as "the old stuff". my personal opinion (and i know it's subjective) is that this is a fallacy based in nostalgia. i think maiden's best albums are killers, piece of mind, somewhere in time, brave new world and a matter of life and death. i listen to tons of music not just maiden, and not just metal. i haven't had a good listen to seventh son, no prayer or fear so i can't really include or disclude those in my list there. i haven't listened to x or xi, whether rightly or wrongly the brief listen i had left me missing dickinson. i guess the other guy is a good singer but i couldn't really get into him singing in the band. so anyhow that info should give you an idea of a) what i think of the album and b) what maiden stuff i like. helping you decide if you might like this album. ------------------------------------------------ ok then, on subsequent listens this album has grown and grown in my eyes (ears) I am finding that this may be my favourite maiden album. disc one is virtually flawless, the red and the black has a couple of changes that aren't as smooth as they could be but not bad. if eternity should fail is brilliant. speed of light is a solid rocker. the great unknown is a steady rolling masterpiece. when the river runs deep is another solid rocker. book of souls is pretty brilliant. disc two is pretty flawless as well. death or glory is a ballsy rocker. shadows of the valley has an intro riff very reminiscent of wasted years but the song is not at all the same and it rolls along nicely. tears of a clown also rocks along nicely with a good lyric acknowledging the fact that most well known funny men (comedians) generally have depression issues, man of sorrows is also good, although possibly the weakest track on the album. empire of the clouds is great, one part of the instrumental section may be slightly long but none the less the song is still one of my favourites. I find that after a few listens i really really like this album. it has everything one would want in an album of this style and the songs are strong. i have the vinyl and cd. someone said the cd is the one to get for the artwork ... i would disagree. the vinyl has the same artwork and it is not restricted to a little book. so if artwork is your thing, get the vinyl.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Possibly Maiden's final studio album of their long and legendary career?

I've been a fan of Iron Maiden ever since 1985, when I randomly bought 'Live After Death' on cassette tape based purely on the cover art alone. I was 11 years old. And I was so blown away by the music that they instantly became my favorite band and still are to this very day. I've seen them live five times, and I happen to like ALL of Maiden's albums. Even the Blaze ones. So let's get to the topic at hand. This 2015 album, 'The Book Of Souls'. I must get the one negative out of the way from the outset: The final song on the album. The song that happens to be by far the longest song on the CD: "Empire Of The Clouds". I just cannot get into this song. Not because of its length, but because the entire piece just doesn't sound like Iron Maiden. The very prominent piano in this song, along with its arrangement makes it sound as if it's not even a Maiden song. Just my opinion on a single track folks! Now, leaving that one little issue behind, what we have here with 'The Book Of Souls' album is total awesomeness my friends. And it warrants a five-star rating! However, he pulls his vocals off really well and it sounds excellent. Bottom line: If you have been hesitant to buy this album at all, just get it immediately. As for my subject title, I'll explain: This album almost sounds like they were WANTING this to be their final album. As if they wanted to "go out on a very strong note" so to speak. I could be wrong of course, but it took five years after 'The Final Frontier' to put this album out, and at this point, another five years have also gone by, and I haven't heard even the slightest news or talk from the band about going back into the studio at all. And then with all these unprecedented Covid-19 laws, it even gives stronger reason to believe that this MIGHT BE their final album. I know fans don't like this kind of talk very much, but we all have to keep in mind that NOTHING lasts forever. Maiden are eternal though. Their legacy will still be alive a hundred years from now. I truly believe that. Up the Irons!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Must have for any Maiden fan

This is five stars just because of Empire of the Clouds! I swear Iron Maiden is the greatest band in the history of the world. Ageless, ferocious, a must have for any Maiden fan! After a few days of listening to the album and reading some of the other reviews on here, I felt it was important to add more to this review. For starters I've been an Iron Maiden fan since I was in 7th grade (1982) and have seen them in concert on 3 different tours, so now you have an idea where I'm coming from. Now to the album...this is by far one of the best albums Iron Maiden has ever released. If you're looking for "The Number of the Beast", you're not going to find it on this album. If you, like me appreciate Maiden's evolution then you will absolutely love this album. When I purchased "A Matter of Life and Death", I made a huge mistake. I listened to the beginning 30 seconds of every song on the album and thought, "What the hell has happened to them?", and put it down and never listened to it again until after "The Final Frontier" was released. The reason I even picked it up, was because my wife had gotten me tickets to see them in concert in Tampa and some of the songs from "Matter" where on the set list so I figured I should at least learn those songs so I could jam to them at the concert. To my surprise, I found that the ENTIRE album was amazing. In fact, I can argue that the final four songs on that album are maybe some of the best work they have ever done. My point is don't give it just one listen and make a decision. Musically this album could quite possibly be the best composition Maiden has EVER done! As I finish this review, I'm listening to the Master Piece "The Empire of the Clouds". I've listened to all 18 minutes of this song at least 50 times now, and with every listen, I grow more and more in love with the genius of Bruce Dickinson. If you've ever listened to the Talisman and thought to yourself man I feel like I'm on a sail ship in the middle of a typhoon, then you will love this song! From the beautiful piano and cellos, the amazing 3 guitar harmonies, the driving bass from Mr. Harris, the genius percussion, the masterful story telling of Bruce Dickinson, to the guitars signaling S-O-S as a time change, it is a true master piece comparable to some of the greatest classical music pieces of all time. Again, if you are a true Iron Maiden fan, then you must have this album!
