The little gap for hooking into the tray is too big, so it sags. So when you put a cup in, it tips and spills. Tried flipping it and tucking into the bottom holder, that worked a little better, but A) SUPER easy to bump. I spilled diet coke all over my bag. B) It still sags, so you can't put an open cup (which most planes offer) in it unless you have drank at least half of it. If, and only if, you have a pre-bought drinks in a large cup with a lid and straw and it gets wider at the top, it will work. It won't be secure, but if you're careful, it will hold it.
