These are not hardshell, but they were well constructed. The large bag its quite big. We used them on two back-to-back trips and were quite pleased. On a cruise we forgot to put our luggage out the night before and were stuck having to carry our own bags off. This was a problem. We crammed two suitcases into the large back, including the easy-bag midsize cloth suitcase. It was bulging and quite heavy. My wife pulled two carry ons with wheels, 1) mine a two wheel carry on, 2) hers the small American Tourister. The backs were so easy to move I needed up pushing the big on and small one at the same time. I had not issue with the expandable handles, but I learned a long time they are used for pulling and not like the top and side handles for lift and load.
