### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Attractive, sturdy, probably not teak—likely mindi. Holes ARE misaligned, but there's a trick…

Given how frequently this item is returned, I was hesitant to buy it, and I initially bought the shelves Amazon recommends instead. Those are gorgeous shelves, and very definitely plantation teak, but they also did not fit the space that I wanted to put them: between a door, closet, and decorative panel I have. (But they are still stunning shelves and so I found a different home for them.) So despite the reviews and returns, I decided to give these shelves a go. First off: my experience is that—as several reviews have noted—most of the holes are misaligned, and enough to make assembly somewhat difficult. I was able to get the shelf together without drilling new holes by balancing the sides on top of the shelves, getting each screw partially in, and then turning them in succession. This is mildly annoying—mostly in having to balance the side on the first two shelves—but manageable when you get the trick, and it took me under half an hour to put the thing together. I'd estimate it took me about twice as long as it should have taken, but it was still not nearly as bad as the reviews made me fear. Also, unlike when bamboo shelves have misaligned holes, this shelf had no splintering when forcing them together in this fashion. My biggest caveat is that since I have other teak stuff, including the more expensive shelf that Amazon recommends in preference to this one, I immediately started suspecting that this shelf was not teak. It does not look like teak, it is even lighter than plantation teak, and most tellingly, it has no discernable odor to it. The shelf that I have that is definitely teak, smells strongly, and kind of like basmati rice. Also, unlike the genuine teak shelves I got, there is no certification from the Indonesian government that this one is sustainable plantation teak. However it's solid wood—not engineered wood—and since I also have stuff that is rubberwood, acacia, pine, and bamboo, I am convinced it is none of those either. It has an attractive pattern, but not one that looks like teak. After some digging, I am convinced that this is probably mindi wood stained to a teak color. Mindi is commonly sold as teak or a teak substitute in Indonesia, but usually flat-sawn rather than quarter-sawn, resulting in a grain pattern similar to what I see on this shelf. Actually, looking at raw mindi wood, I think these shelves would be even MORE attractive if they had kept their natural color, but I still find them very attractive even with the teak stain. These shelves are being sold as bathroom shelves, and it looks like mindi wood is naturally water-resistant but less so than teak. I am not sure how water resistant the finishing makes these shelves beyond that, but I imagine that unless you're keeping them literally in the shower, you should be fine. I bought them intending to use them as bookshelves though, and my immediate concern was whether they would hold the weight of books. Like I said, they are not engineered wood which is already a huge in their favor, but unlike my definite teak shelves, these are make of thinner pieces of wood, and not reinforced. In fact, the wood slats are thinner than any of the bamboo shelves I have—and those are also reinforced. Keep in mind: they are NOT being advertised as bookshelves, but if they were teak I should still be able to use them that way. However my research indicates mindi is less sturdy than teak, and the slats were concerningly thin. I decided to test with some of my heaviest hardcovers, and they didn't bow at all that I could see—so I've concluded that they should be fine for the lighter hardcovers and trade paperbacks I actually plan on mostly keeping on them. Obviously there is nothing on the side to keep books from falling off (again, they were not designers bookshelves, though I see a lot of "industrial style" bookshelves with the same problem), but if you push the books all the way to the back, the back frame and slight elevation at the edge are sufficient to keep the books upright. Actually, the grain of this wood means that books actually tend to stay upright even unsupported—a pleasant surprise compared to the bamboo bookshelves I normally use.. Also, another point in favor of the shelves themselves is that somehow, despite the misaligned holes making me worry they'd come out crooked, the shelves ended up very straight and sturdy and don't wobble at all. Actually, it wobbled a little bit at first—but not as bad as bamboo tends to—so I went and I tightened all the screws as far as they'd go by hand—something I would not dare to do with pine or bamboo—and that fixed the issue completely. Overall, when you consider that the alternative Amazon suggests is about two and a half times the cost, but larger, made of thicker pieces and reinforced, has a more attractive pattern, and is unquestionably plantation teak, I would say that that is better value for the money. The holes on those shelves are also properly aligned. Conversely, if you are on a budget and looking for bookshelves that are inexpensive and sturdy, I would recommend going with bamboo shelves, which are lighter, cheaper, and sturdier than mindi wood. As I see it, there are two use cases for these shelves, but they are probably the best shelves on Amazon for those two use cases. One is if you want to use them as bathroom shelves as they are advertised, and you either cannot afford the more expensive alternative, or do not have the space. The other is if you want to use them as bookshelves, and want something that is attractive and solid wood, and you need to fit a very specific space. But in those use cases, I think you could do a lot worse, and I have bought worse shelves with better reviews and return rates. I suspect that the return rate for the shelves and bad reviews has mostly to do with the misaligned holes, which as I said, is manageable IF you stack the sides on the shelves such that the screws are going directly down and screw them in turn.
