My pit is 5' x 3.5' and I originally purchased 300 of the Commercial 3" diameter balls, which were able to cover the bottom of the pit. I'm a large adult (~200 lbs) and I could not crush them by stepping on them. The colors came separated in 100 ball bags in a large box.I liked these so much that I immediately bought some more (another 300) for me and my nephew as well! The sellers were very nice and reached out to ask me what colors I wanted, but I was a little hard to get a hold of by phone. It would be nice if we could request which colors we want up front, but honestly I was happy just to get them - I wasn't picky about colors. My random colors ended up being orange, purple, and green.If you're making a ball pit yourself and you're wondering how many to get, in my experience you will definitely need way more than you think you will, especially if you want to have a deep pit (more than 1 foot deep). If you do, I recommend getting the larger diameter (3 inch) over the smaller - as, like they advertise - it will obviously cover more cubic feet with lesser balls total.100 balls is definitely less than you think, but I think any more than 250 for an infant ball pit might be too much. I've seen other DIY ball pit builders advise on considering who will be using this the most. For infants, you might want smaller and less balls (just not too small so they can fit them in their mouth, of course) but older kids will probably appreciate the bigger ones more. Consider if you will, how much you will mind cleaning up after these. Even the neatest kids will end up tossing them around just from playing in the pit.As an adult enjoying this hobby, I found it worth all the effort! Brought back many good memories and now my friends want one too! :)If you're curious about the colors, I think you can order a sample of each of the colors from the seller as well. I wish I would have done this just because I've heard from other buyers that they provided a coupon as well for your bigger purchase.TL;DR - you get what you pay for.
