OK, Maybe at a pristine beach you could get away with it, but consider shells, consider sticks, sharp rocks. Tents are mostly pitched on rough ground, hardly on pristine sand or grass. I feel it is a necessity, why buy a tent a pass up an opportunity to increase its longevity and durability. It does its job, it protects the integrity of your tent floor. You can buy a tarp, custom fit the tarp to the size of your floor, add the tie downs and cut your cost if your the DYI type. If you pass on the footprint, i recommend the DYI footprint, your tent will thank you!
