Could this product be used to dust my insects at every feed & do I need calcium as well?** A: Apologies Claire, my experience of this product has been with tortoises. Thanks **Q: Would it benefit my tarantulas if I dust their crickets/ locusts with this powder ? YouTube videos recommend doing it, but hard to know what product.** A: I suspect it would not help. It is aimed mainly at supplementing vitamins and calcium in balance to build bone and general health in vertebrates and avoid metabolic bone disease; specifically aimed at reptiles and amphibians. I have this sort of animal and they eat their prey whole generally, so in the case of insect food the dust on the crickets etc. get swallowed with the animal. That's not they way tarantulas feed in that their fangs penetrate their prey and suck out the pre-digested nutrients. I would say you are certainly better off feeding your crickets etc the best possible food in variety such as that used for gut loading insects for reptiles/amphibians eg Bug Grub, fresh vegetables in small amounts the insects need to be dry, crushed dog food, quality fish food etc.. Crickets will eat wet and dry food but it is important that if you feed it dry that you include some moisture in the form of perhaps a small piece of carrot or potato peelings. Mealworms are much the same. Locusts prefer wet food and in particular leaves; dandilions are excellent. Remember wet food goes off quickly so remove it as it spoils. In my limited experience Tarantulas seem to love mealworms so to mantids. Before feeding mealworms, the day before I make sure a small piece of carrot is fed to them to increase their moisture content. I had a very undernourished adult Mexican Red Knee who consumed enormous amounts of morioworms (very large mealworms with softer outer skin) - they can bite so you need to make sure that it doesn't stay in the tank but gets eaten straight away. Some people recommend killing them before feeding, or at least pinching them in the middle so they die if the pet doesn't catch them. I did not find that essential for the spider which killed the mealworm immediately in every case. They are high in calories fat content but the spider recovered its health and condition quickly. Used sensibly and well fed I personally found morioworms the easiest and economical way to feed.
