Review: Top drawer collection !!! - For anyone who appreciates great blues-rock, no holds boogie and musicians with a sense of humour, as well as talent, this brilliant box set is just perfect - ZZ Top's first 10 albums, spanning 20 years, in superb replica cardboard sleeves (including a gatefold for Tres Hombres and double gatefold for Tejas) in a clam-shell box: all at a remarkably low price, and sure to appeal to hard-core fans and others alike. There are no bonus tracks included, although arguably this helps to preserve the original listening experience. And although there's no information about remastering, the discs are described as "original mixes" (including ZZ Tops' First Album, Rio Grande Mud and Tejas for the first time). I'm sure that aficionados will be able to analyse the sound quality compared to earlier versions on vinyl and CD. Controversially, "Legs" is not the original album version - it's the single remix which replaced it on subsequent pressings of the vinyl. There can't be much to say about the music that hasn't already been said - from the start it was obvious that the 'Little ol' band from Texas' had something special. Guitarist Billy Gibbons (one of blues-rock's finest exponents) developed a truly unique sense of tone and rhythm which along with Dusty Hill's bass and Frank Beard's drums evolved into a true signature sound. And Hill and Gibbons' vocals suit the songs perfectly. But this collection reveals that the band isn't just a basic guitar, bass & drums line-up, as all three turn their hands to various other instruments, including blues harp, fiddle, keyboards and even a range of saxophones to form their own horn section! Arguably, the band really hit it's groove with Tres Hombres - my favourite Top album - and although some fans baulked at Eliminator with its use of synths and pop-rock emphasis, the massive commercial success which came with the car introduced the band to a wider audience, some of whom will, no doubt, have then explored the delights of ZZ's back catalogue. I reckon each of these albums has something significant to offer and this collection demonstrates how the Texas trio could take a basic blues-rock format to places you wouldn't think possible (I'm not talking Wolverhampton here). Anyone totally new to the band can get a Tex-Mex flavour from one of the compilations (Rancho Texicano being a great introduction and, in effect, a sampler of these 10 albums) but this box set is an absolute belter. 5*. 'scuse me - I'm off to get a Stetson!
Review: Absolute bargain, and great to boot - Ok, ZZ Top's first 10 albums in a bargain priced package. The individual cd's are packaged in reproduction cardboard sleeves including two gatefolds which faithfully reproduce the original Vinyl artwork, there's no booklet or liner notes included. Here's the interesting part, it's a tenner cheaper than the digital download, and the CD's contain the original mixes, whereas the autoripped/Digital release contains 2006 remixes of Tres Hombres and Fandango and the 2008 remix of Eliminator, certainly the remixes of the two early albums is inferior to the original mix, imposing the more modern Eliminator sound on the mid seventies releases. The original mixes of Tres Hombres and Fandango hadn't been available on CD prior to this release so it's worth hunting out for this alone.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Top ZZ Top !

OK, I'll keep this short as I guess anyone looking at this knows the band; if not, then what a treat you can have. Forget about Zz Top 6 Pack and Original Album Series [5-Pack ], get this box and have 10 albums at a bargain price. From their simple blues influenced first album in 1970 through to their pop-rock of Eliminator and Afterburner and their return to form with 1990s Recycler, there is much to enjoy here. The mini LP sleeves include the gatefolds for Tres Hombres & Tejas with the sleeves being high quality in my opinion. All packaged up in a cardboard clam-box. Minor grip is that there is no booklet or information contained in the box whatsoever, however at such a bargain price, can one really complain. I've noticed that the price has gone up already from the pre-order one, so maybe it would be a good idea to get your order in quick for 20 years worth of music from this great US band!
