The metal mesh is helpful in that cords can be fed through the mesh if desired, which is better than a sold piece of metal that forces cables to run off to the side. Also the mesh allows better airflow to allow heat dissipation, which is useful because I have a bunch of cables and transformers that give off heat sitting on this tray.
